A small camera, a little infrared light, and a microcontroller. The goal is to capture facial movement and make it useful for expressive avatars in experiences like VRChat.
Two 850 nm infrared LEDs provide illumination. A transistor lets the ESP32-S3 switch them together.
A compatible camera connects through a 24-pin ribbon connector. The ESP32-S3 controls the sensor and receives its image data.
The intended next step: firmware sends images to Babble on a host, where facial tracking can bring an avatar’s expressions to life.
Hardware is taking shape. Babble integration is planned; firmware and end-to-end validation are still to come.

Here’s where the

The first board design was completed and sent for fabrication.
Alpha samples arrived from the factory. A design error was found, and the board did not work as expected.
Design completed. Samples are on the way; hardware verification comes next. This is the board shown above.
The four-layer version is still being designed.
Onboard firmware, the 3D enclosure, and Babble integration are still to be developed.
